Wood
products have been used for centuries and at one time were found on homes of
all styles and sizes. The best wood products are known and respected for
their longevity and natural beauty. Wood products have developed a less than
outstanding reputation over the last 30 years due to the poor quality of
wood that has been used by some manufacturers, roofing contractors and home
builders. However, there are excellent wood products available and wood roof
systems can be properly installed to serve you for 20-30 years or more.
Choose a
contractor that has a relationship with the high quality manufacturers.
Currently, most of the quality wood products in the U.S. actually come from
Canadian mills. When evaluating quality - the vertical grain is as important
as the thickness. These wood products are also available with pressure
treatments for fungus prevention and fire retardance.
The primary
styles found in wood products are shakes and shingles. Shingles are thinner,
smooth cut, and provide a neat and consistent appearance. Shakes are
thicker, often hand-split on the face (showing the wood grain) and installed
with longer exposures - all of which results in a rougher and more rustic
appearance. In general, shakes may actually be less expensive and last
longer.
